Kebbi State, Nigeria – Heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding in parts of Kebbi State, sweeping away homes, injuring dozens, and displacing hundreds of residents. The deluge, which lasted for several hours on Friday night, has been described by locals as one of the worst in recent memory.
Zogirma Village Bears Brunt of Flood
In Zogirma village, located in the Bunza Local Government Area, an estimated one hundred houses were reportedly swept away. The sudden downpour left many residents unprepared, resulting in numerous injuries and widespread destruction.
“Many people sustained serious injuries. The rain came suddenly and didn’t stop for hours. Roofs were blown away, mud homes collapsed, and people were forced to flee in the middle of the night,” shared Haruna Danmalam, a Bunza resident, who spoke to reporters on Saturday. He added that the aftermath has left many families stranded and in urgent need of shelter, food, and medical attention.
Following the disaster, Malam Muhammed Umar Mawo, the Secretary of Bunza Local Government Area, visited the affected community to express solidarity on behalf of the council chairman. Mawo assured victims that the local government is compiling a comprehensive report for the Kebbi State Government to facilitate urgent intervention. “We are not leaving you alone in this difficult time. The government is aware and will take necessary steps to support you,” he stated during his visit.
Four Villages Submerged in Arewa Local Government
The destruction extended to the Arewa Local Government Area, where flash floods submerged four villages: Tungar Chindo, Tungar Kure, Feske Malabawa, and Feske Rafi. Over 60 houses were destroyed in these areas, with residents also reporting significant losses of livestock and other valuables.
Locals are calling this a “double tragedy,” as the floods have hit just as many were preparing for the crucial farming season.
Calls for Aid and Warnings from Experts
Residents across both affected areas are urgently appealing to the Kebbi State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and other humanitarian organizations for assistance. Their immediate needs include temporary shelters, food, medical supplies, and support for rebuilding their lives.
